Since I am doing this for library school I want to tell of some of the library services I encountered.
I found out that there is almost always a reference librarian (or library student) online, usually on Info Island or Info Island International.
I spoke to some of them to find out if they get many questions. They do get many people coming for help, although most of the questions are about Second Life. I also asked if they get many regular people or if it mostly people that have something to do with libraries in real life. As I suspected most people who come to Info Island are indeed somehow involved with libraries in the real world.

There are many opportunities to volunteer. You can help with reference, cataloging, or collection development (finding audio books and other resources). Some types of volunteering require a library degree or being in library school. This notecard provides those interested with more details and contact information.
There are also many display boards and terminals around the island that give access to library resources. Some link to OPACs and others link to web reference resources. Some public libraries have islands in SL and users can gain access to the library web sites from within SL.
